Stefan Diez “optimizes” the sofa for Magis

Stefan Diez designed a modular sofa for Magis, which includes four elements: a seat module completed by an armrest on the right or on the left and by an ottoman. The manufacturing process highlights a request from the Italian manufacturer to be part of a sustainable approach, both in the optimization of the structure and in the resources used.

The Costume sofa econsists of a body in recycled and recyclable polyethylene, produced by rotational molding using industrial waste from the furniture and automotive sectors. The backrest and seat are upholstered with a pocket spring insert. They are then covered with a thin layer of polyurethane foam. Everything is held together by a fabric cover, secured by straps, which can be separated at any time without difficulty. Modularity is based on a simple assembly of 4 elements: seat, armrests and ottoman. The junction element is a plastic strip which can be inserted into the slots placed at the four corners of the the seat. This connector is available in matching but contrasting colors.

This principle imagined by Stefan Diez therefore has several advantages: It uses less foam compared to traditional manufacturing, most materials can be easily recycled, the The structure can therefore be easily dismantled to be cleaned or to change the coating.

Versatile, pragmatic, the Costume sofa has been designed with a sustainable approach to the use of resources.
