Villa Albertine: apply for a residency in New York

In partnership with the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation and WantedDesign, the Villa Albertine is launching a call for applications for two French creators – a craftsman and a designer – for a New York residency in 2023. Please note that applications are open until April 10.

Launched in the fall of 2021, the Villa Albertine program offers residencies in the United States for artists and creators. Among the winners of the first edition, we note for example Robin Bourgeois ( cf Intramuros 210 ) and Dimitry Hlinka ( cf Intramuros 207 )

Villa Albertine: residences in 2023

The call for applications for the next edition is extended until April 10. It concerns the selection of two creators for two residencies lasting two months, between May and July or between October and December 2023. Located in Brooklyn, these exploration residences anchored in IndustryCity are intended to be translated as field investigations that want to inspire and create links. The creator will have the choice of relying on an original proposal, designed for the Villa Albertine, or else of basing himself on pre-existing research, which would find a singular development for the project. This opening across the Atlantic will thus allow the selected craftsman and designer to have access to key professional organizations in the sector in New York.

Villa Albertine: support and material support

Throughout the two months of residency, the Villa Albertine undertakes to provide tailor-made support, adapted to the expectations and profile of each resident. It will also be supported by WantedDesign, a reference structure in the sector in New York, and will act as an accelerator of meetings and discoveries for the resident through a program of appointments, visits and events established according to their needs. .

In partnership with the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation, the material needs relating to the projects and the life of the residents will also be taken care of by the Villa Albertine, namely a residence allowance to cover daily expenses, a personal workspace at the heart of Industry City – in direct contact with the WantedDesign team -, return travel, accommodation, health insurance, civil liability and repatriation.

Eligibility criteria, application procedure and partnership

To apply, the candidate must be over 21 years old, must exercise his artistic or intellectual practice in a professional capacity and must be recognized as such by his peers. The submitted project must be a logical follow-up to its previous research objects and in relevance with the ecosystem that surrounds the residence. The candidate must therefore have a fairly advanced profile in his practice, have a particular attraction for the United States and particularly New York, to the point of wanting to develop his practice there.

Application forms should be sent by email (design.crafts@villa-albertine.org) before April 10, 2022 with the following documents:

  • A presentation file in French of the candidate’s background and work in less than 10 pages
  • A short presentation (less than 2 pages) of the research and prospecting intention, specifying whether it is an application for the craftsman or the designer
  • The demonstration of the level of English through a short video presentation

Once the winner has been selected, the Villa Albertina will initiate a dialogue in order to identify with him a French partner who would be relevant to support his project. This partnership will not require a financial contribution, but this support may develop into assistance with drafting the project, identification of resources and useful contacts for the candidate, promotion of the project via social networks or post-residency achievement. The candidate has the possibility of suggesting a partnership as soon as he sends his application.
