Retro 2020: First edition of France Design Week

Built in 2020 as a version 0, or test edition, France Design Week was dependent on developments in the health crisis that marked this year. But this nation-wide “Design Week” stood up and was held in September in 60 cities.

Born from the recommendations presented during the Assises du design in 2019, France Design Week is an event label aimed at giving visibility to the diversity and vitality of French design practices, in a common and shared time sequence.

The label unites the world of French design at an international, annual and global event which aims to promote the design and know-how of its designers to professionals and to raise public awareness of its practice, by highlighting honor all fields of design. Developed during the first confinement, then expanded during the summer under tight deadlines, the event was able to see the light of day in September with great respect for health and distancing instructions.

France Design Week 2020 was:

▪ the 13 regions present with 60 cities involved.
▪ One month of design: 2 weeks of official dates, from September 1 to 15, 2020, and additional dates until October 5.
▪ More than 260 events recorded: 172 inserts referenced on the website map, some inserts mentioning several events. All the Paris Design Week and Lille World Design Capital events, which were labeled, have not all been detailed.
▪ About fifty proposals exclusively online, to deal with health constraints.
▪ A very wide variety of events: mainly conferences and round tables, exhibitions, open houses and webinars. We could also attend workshops, parties or festive afterworks… To find soon: the archives in texts and images of these events on the France Design Week website.
▪ Attendance of around 206,400 people throughout France throughout the period, face-to-face and online.
